Key differences between Acton and other school models
Our learners don’t spend their days memorizing and regurgitating facts. Instead, they have a chance to have hands-on real life experiences through project and play-based learning. We believe that students learn by doing.
The learning environment cultivates curiosity, grit, and resilience. We believe that asking the right questions is more important than knowing the right answers, and encourage students to try their very best every day. At our studio we celebrate failures; as they typically lead to growth and higher learning. We encourage children to learn from their mistakes and develop a growth mindset.
We are a studio built upon Christian principles and foundations; and are guided by verses Psalm 139:14, Galatians 6:9, and Proverbs 22:6. We encourage our students to develop personal virtues such as honesty, hard work, responsibility, stewardship, kindness and empathy. Armed with purpose and good character, we believe our students will launch into adulthood prepared to find their calling and change the world; discovering just who God made them to be.
The Acton Academy model is learner-driven. This means young people take ownership of their education and peer relationships. Acton students learn to think independently, take responsibility, and embrace challenges.
We believe the learning experience is much richer when the teacher offers insightful questions and facilitates hands-on learning. Guides use the Socratic method, always responding to questions with new questions. This exchange hones our young learners’ critical thinking and communication skills. Our Guides model, build and expect a caring and supportive classroom community. No boring sit at your desk teacher-led lecture-style learning at Acton!
Ascend uses a blended-learning approach; where we utilize the latest in adaptive educational technology in a self-paced learning environment. The technology is designed to help students master math, reading, spelling, grammar and other rule-oriented disciplines. This type of learning is also designed to foster responsibility, goal-setting, and teamwork.
